Jared Diamond has written a very comprehensive and thorough book in "The World Until Yesterday". In it, he describes aspects of the cultures of different traditional societies and categorizes them into different sections, including treatment of the elderly, childrearing, religion, and health. The book is hefty at over 450 pages, and it is not light reading by any means - however, it is chockful of interesting information. If you want to know a lot of things about a lot of societies, then this book has it.So what's the problem? It's in the way that Diamond arranges the book. It is arranged by topic area, and each section starts with general descriptions of that topic area. After that, and throughout the remainder of each chapter, Diamond provides various examples of how one or more individual traditional societies manages the issue at hand. In doing so, he talks a great deal about some societies, and not very much about others. Not surprisingly, given his affinity for New Guinea, there is a lot about the traditional societies on that island in this book. The result of all of this are somewhat choppy chapters which are very comprehensive but not terribly cohesive. The book might have been easier to read if there had been sections on the individual societies, like the Inuit, but then it may have been difficult to compare the different societies' customs and traditions by topic. So while I found the book difficult to read at times, I am not sure that Diamond could have arranged it much differently with the same content.Overall, the book has a lot of great information and is very interesting, if you can get past the way it is organized. The content is very high level and not for the faint of heart. The material is so detailed that I could see this book being used for a cultural anthropology course. One last comment - Diamond does not have a great reference section in this book, and in some of the chapters I wanted to see where he got some of his information. He does have a section where he talks about his sources, but I would have preferred a simple bibliography so I could have looked up materials myself.

Bottom Line First: Jared Diamond’s The World Before Yesterday is Ok. Diamond struck gold with Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed: Revised Editionwhich was better than his Pulitzer Prize winning Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies] but here he has lost his mojo. The World Before Yesterday may pass as a backup read to go with a better undergraduate text in a real anthropology class or as a discussion starter for non-anthropologists but otherwise I am not sure who is the best audience for this book. Diamond makes a few good points, especially towards the end when he discusses how we in the modern or as he phases it the WIERD (Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich and Democratic) world might improve our diet to avoid modern world non-contagious diseases like hypertension and diabetes. Otherwise this is a collection of more or less well documented observations about how he thinks human society used to work before the centralized state. It is good to know that in the WEIRD world we are less likely to kill each other, no matter how industrialized and deadly modern warfare has become. Then again he was writing without considering the new cycles of killing in modern killing growing from the asymmetric warfare based on revenge killing motivated by religious hatreds. A failing in this regard is a failing to redo some of his observations by cross tabbing analysis between societies given to ancient cycles of warfare and ancient attitudes towards strangers and traders.A personal measure of my reaction to Yesterday is the fact that I had originally read it when it was first published about 5 years ago. I hat entirely forgotten reading it and was well into re reading it when I remembered anything from the first read. That is it is mostly a forgettable book. His advice about adopting the Paleolithic diet or the Mediterranean diet or at least the Italian habit of eating slowly may still have the support of qualified medical opinion, but as a taint of food fad about it. Certainly it is no long out of the box thinking that in the modern diet we eat too much sugar and too much processed food. Though in the case of processed food, we may just need a better set of definitions. In the case of so called organic food, a term Diamond wisely avoids, one cannot be certain what it means other than expensive.Against the criticism from the world of anthropology that Diamond gives too much weight to differences in climate. Diamond’s argument reads like the same economics argued by the folks behind Freakonomics: A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything. Look at the win loss analysis for a given type of cultural response and that is how that culture will develop, Diamond argues the math behind the cultivation of widely separate plots of land against eh obvious efficiency of working one large plot. The inefficient scattered plots pay off better in the case of crop failure and so that strategy wins.I do not dislike The World Before Yesterday, much of Diamonds thoughts are well argued. Mostly it lacks the clarity of purpose in the two earlier works. For all of its deliberate organization and systematic class room lecture style, it rambles and seems to be at cross purposes. Pre-state subsistence societies do have something to teach modern societies. Humans can learn from predator animals and flowering plants and the stars in the sky and from almost anything. I am not sure I can recommend all of those implied books or get too excited about this one.

This book is very anecdotal and at times condescending. It is very limited in scope and relies heavily on his own experiences in Papua New Guinea, with some discussion of a few ethnographic case studies--by no means a comprehensive review of the broad range of cultural expression around the world. While using this anthropological literature Diamond does seek to provide some support for his conclusions, much of this book reads like soft answers to a question posed to an undergraduate class in anthropology or geography. While I agree that it is problematic to romanticize what he terms "traditional societies," he does very little to problematize some of the more insidious aspects of state society. I also agree that there is much we can learn from cross cultural reflection, but it doesn't take 466 pages to suggest that we might do well to dispense with the salt shaker. I did enjoy some of the discussion regarding raising children and how risk is conceived and negotiated within different societies. Overall, the notion of learning from "traditional societies" is an important one, but this work falls a little flat to me. An okay book and easy read though

THE GULF WAR: OVERREACTION & EXCESSIVENESS

Hassan A. El-Najjar

This book is critical of the way the Bush administration reacted to the 1990 Iraqi-Kuwaiti crisis and the way it conducted the 1991 Gulf War. It reveals the real story of the War in a way that counter-balances the pro-War accounts that have flooded the market, during the last ten years.

The chapters of the book reveal the real story of the Gulf War through a thorough investigation and analysis of the major issues and questions that led to the development of the Crisis and the War. Among these are the Iraqi claims of Kuwait; how Kuwaitis treated the majority of the population, immigrants; the background of inter-Arab conflict; the role of Western interests in the development of the conflict; how the 1990 Crisis developed; how the War decision was made, who made it, and when? why did the Bush administration reject all peace initiatives? Was the War excessive? Was the destruction of Iraq a goal in itself? What about Kuwaitis, were they innocent? What did they do to Palestinians after the War and why? Finally, what were the War results and consequences, for America and Arabia?

Had this book for many years, but only now read it through carefully. Australia is close to me in many ways and this book brought it much closer. My mother's sister, brother in law and parents immigrated to Australia in 1950 from the Displaced Person camps we were living in after WW2 in Germany. My dad, mom and I came to the US in 1951 when I was 3. Today, my eldest daughter is married to an Aussie and my 2 granddaughters were born there. Since 1981, I've been down under twenty times on business and to visit. I love that country and its people, but I am keenly aware of its history white prejudice. "New Australians" like my Hungarian family felt the brunt of discrimination after they arrived in the 1950s. Such is the story of immigrants everywhere to some degree.I relished Sally Morgan's heartfelt and intimate story about her family with aboriginal roots handed down through her half-aboriginal grandmother, Nan, and why this family "secret" was hidden under the mask of heritage from India. We see life in Australia through the nuances of skin color and evidence of bloodline. A key moment in this book for me was Nan's brother Arthur, also from an aboriginal mother and white father, stating Nan was "brainwashed" by whites with political power over her to believe she was a lesser person due to her looks and color indicating aboriginal blood. Arthur we learn was no less than heroic in his struggles to overcome his status through working harder and smarter that his white counterparts. Nan bent but never broke under the forces she could not change. This book is also about PTSD that was poorly understood after WW2. We meet the story of Morgan's white father Bill who suffered torture during captivity in the European theater. Because he had not lost a limb or gone blind of deaf, his pyshcological wounds were looked upon as malingering, as him being not tough enough, thus more his fault. The crude underbelly of Social Darwinism drives these attitudes among some people to this day: The lucky and successful are blessed by some kind of god--the rest can go to hell. This caste as color system, more ingrained in India than most countries, is nevertheless apparent in every culture. Why white Scandinavian skin and the blue-eyed blond became the iconic peak of human aesthetic evolution, is not merely a European prejudice--blond trophy wives are common to men of every skin color. There are psychological and cultural factors for this phenomenon yet to be thoroughly explained. Hints of why white is attractive bleed through in Morgan's memoir, but the beauty of the "blackfella" bleeds through way stronger. The special aboriginal story and their place down under is yet being told. Morgan has offered us a foundation for telling it well through the voices of those who live it.

Reading the other reviews on here, I find it interesting to note that just about everyone gives it either 5 stars or 1 star, but there's almost nothing in between. It's quite true that it is a poorly written book - the writing is dull and prosaic, and there's little to recommend it from a literary point of view. Had I not had to read it for a class, I doubt I would have bothered finishing it. The narrative of searching and redemption which runs throughout is so predictable and cliché that I have the feeling that if this had been an American story it would have been snatched up by Oprah's Book Club long ago. Having said that, however, I think there are some important things about this book that probably need consideration.More than the book itself, what I find interesting is that this was a huge bestseller in Australia. And I mean HUGE. She may well be the highest grossing Indigenous author in the country, although I'd be guessing. The fact that so many people read the book says something about the mood of White Australia over the last twenty years, with this country trying to come to grips with its shameful past. I've inclined to believe that most of this is an attempt to ease collective white guilt than actually taking steps to reconcile and compensate for over two centuries of oppression. Sally Morgan's book is popular, I think, because she doesn't actually challenge her audience to move much beyond their comfort zone, and the construction of Aboriginality that she presents is quite problematic, stereotypical, and firmly entrenched in the past. The book has attracted quite a lot of controversy in Australia, mostly in academic circles, but occasionally this rears its head in the mainstream media (for example, the issue of the Drake-Brockmans demanding DNA testing to prove Morgan is not descended from their ancestors). The idea of the 'truthfulness' of the book is largely a question of genre more than anything else: is it an autobiography or a non-fiction novel? 'My Place' raises a lot of questions about how we define these categories, and about the nature of history and memory work.People might be interested to know that the book also attracted a considerable amount of backlash from the Aboriginal community itself: she is often criticised for asserting an Aboriginal identity that, by her own admission, she did not grow up with. Unaware of her Indigenous origins for most of her youth, she claims her Aboriginality without ever having lived with what it really meant to be Aboriginal in the 1950s-70s. Because she has fairer skin than the stereotypical Aboriginal person, she had the luxury of pretending to be of a different nationality - an option simply not available to many Indigenous Australians - and was thus not subjected to the same level of prejudice which she might otherwise have been.If you're interested in Australian history and Aboriginal issues you should probably read Sally Morgan's 'My Place', not because it's good writing, but because it has certainly been a landmark in the recent history of Australian literature. However, I also suggest trying to lay your hands on some of the material which critiques Morgan's work in order to gain a more balanced perspective of Indigenous Australia. Alternatively, for an all-round better account of what is now known as the Stolen Generation, try Doris Pilkington's 'Rabbit Proof Fence', or the film by the same name. If read with a critical mind, 'My Place' is worthy of a look, but it is highly problematic taken at face value.

This has been one of my favorite books as I "read my way around the world," and this is one of the best autobiographies I've ever read. The book gave a good feel for Australian culture in general. It touched on growing up, family secrets, Australian history, Aboriginal culture, race issues, even war and mental health. It was a page-turner for me. I found myself picking up the book during breakfast, work breaks, even staying up late at night to read the next couple of chapters. The writing slogged a bit during the stories of her grandmother and her great uncle, but nothing you can't get through, and I learned a lot. This was a very enjoyable book, and I can easily see how it claims the descriptor as "An Australian Classic." I'll be donating my paperback to the public library and buying a hardcover copy to read again in the future.

A fascinating and well-written account of what it was like to grow up with Aboriginal blood in the Australia of the last century. There are many painful moments but these are somehow mitigated by the incredible resilience and beauty of spirit of Ms. Morgan's family. There's a whole lot of courage, integrity and joy.

I read this book when I was 8 yo when my dad, a diplomat, moved us to Sydney for 6 months. A friend of his, notice that I love to read, and he gave me this book. I fell in love with Sally and her family instantly! Her feisty grandmother, her mother, and even her dad. Now I'm 26, I finally found a kindle version of it and I cannot wait to re-read this in the cottage up north for the 4th of July weekend!

He's got her tied up, but she's got him out of control. Glass artist Jen Kessler has hit the jackpot-a cheap apartment in a charming Victorian house, complete with a sexy, intense, buttoned-down landlord...who may or may not have a riding crop in his bedroom. She's not looking for a lover, but when her innocent, impulsive hug sparks kisses as hot as molten glass, it leads to bondage, spankings, and more naughtiness that, up to now, she had only tasted. His new tenant may have wild, dyed hair and an unconventional job, but Cornell math professor Drake Matthews admires the work ethic that got her out of debt. Then he's stunned at how quickly she destroys decades of his carefully cultivated self-control. Soon their sexual and emotional passions push them to the edge-and beyond. But it's not all good, dirty fun. As Drake takes more and more control of Jen in the bedroom, her deeply ingrained independent streak pushes back. And it'll take more than a shared penchant for ropes, paddling, and coffee to overcome pasts that could unravel their relationship before it begins. Warning: Contains kinky sex, molten glass, geeky higher mathematics, family secrets, and irresponsible consumption of coffee.

CHAPTER 1

Steven Who?

Even if You Weren't Popular in High School, Didn't Make Straight A's, and Didn't Make the Football Team, You Can Still Achieve Phenomenal Success

Two Stevens sat next to each other at high school football games; one was in the band, the other in the color guard. Both were mediocre students, rarely dated, and were totally unknown. They excelled in nothing significant. One was Steven Spielberg, and the other was Steven who?

Insight 1: Past achievement is not a true predictor of future success

Most high schools save a part of their yearbook for the "most likely" selections. You know -- the student most likely to succeed, the student most likely to be president, and so forth. I remember voting that Chuck James would be the most likely to succeed. He was senior class president, an "A" student, a good athlete, and very popular. I remember when the ballots were passed out to the senior class. There were many categories, and many students were nominated for each category. Obviously, my name was not on the ballot. If it had been, I definitely wouldn't have won in any category. Most of the class of 1966 would have had puzzled looks on their faces and would have had one question when they came to my name: "Steven who ?"

I didn't have the looks or athletic prowess to be popular with the "in" crowd, and my "B" average wasn't high enough to put me in the intellectual crowd. Consequently, most of my friendships were with kids off campus. As a freshman I joined the Civil Air Patrol because two of my buddies had joined. Even though I didn't realize it at the time, joining CAP was going to play a very important role in my future.

Another Steven at our school was very similar to me. Like me, he didn't have the looks or athletic abilities to be part of the "in" crowd. He was a mediocre student, and his favorite activities were likewise "off campus." He was a good clarinetist, however, and was in the school's marching band. But at school football games, nothing was better than being on the football team. They had it made. And nothing was worse (in terms of status) than being in the band -- nothing except being in the color guard. Teenagers in the 60s weren't impressed with high school students who wore military uniforms. But we got free tickets to the games and sat next to the band. I sat next to the clarinets and often conversed with the clarinetist who sat on my right. His name was the same as mine (Steve), but that was all I knew about him.

Twenty years later I received a call from my mom asking if I had ever met Steven Spielberg when I was at Arcadia. I told her he couldn't have been a student at Arcadia because even though most kids didn't know me, I knew just about everyone and never met him. She told me to grab my yearbook and look up his name. I not only found his name, I found his picture and was amazed to discover he was the "Steve" I sat next to at so many football games!

How could this be? How could Steven Spielberg have gone to my high school and yet have been totally unknown to me and most of the other students on campus? Surely his genius, his creativity, his incredible drive would have been evident to all, even in high school. Not even close. And yet all the qualities that have made him so successful were just as much alive in his mind and heart then. So why was he never successful in anything significant in high school? The answer lies in what we deem "significant."

In school the three most important areas of achievement are athletics, grades, and popularity -- at least those are the three most significant areas to students and teachers. So when a person doesn't excel in any one of those areas, he doesn't excel in anything "significant." By academia's definition, neither Steven nor I excelled in anything that mattered, and I'm sure none of our peers or faculty ever expected us to achieve anything noteworthy with our lives.

This is the kind of narrow outlook that traps probably 90 percent of the American population; that is, most of us never achieve stardom in school, so when we pass into adulthood, we never expect to achieve anything worthwhile in life. We have accepted everyone else's definition of "significance" and consequently set our sights so low that we never even try to achieve the success most of us would like to attain.

I am told that when baby elephants are born, their trainers tie a rope to a pole planted securely in the ground and then tie the other end to the baby elephant. The elephant quickly learns that when that rope is on his neck, he can't go anywhere. By the time he becomes an adult, he can be tied to a small pole that he could easily rip right out of the ground, but he doesn't even try because he has been conditioned to believe that when that rope is around his neck, he can't go anywhere.

The same thing happens with most adult Americans. Having achieved nothing they consider important in their youth, they have come to believe that they are simply average and therefore expect to achieve nothing significant in their lives. By the end of this book I hope that everybody reading it will see that the superachievers are no different from the rest of us. They have just learned that the rope that kept them tied to the stake was really only a thread, and the stake itself only a yardstick. By the end of this book, you will have no reason to accept mediocrity. At this point you can't even begin to imagine what average people can do when they break loose of the bonds that have kept them bound to the "status quo."

So the first law of success involves your past and how to break loose from what you see as your lack of success.

Law of Past Failures: Don't use your past failures or lack of achievement as an excuse or limitation for your lack of achievement in the present or future. The former does not control the latter.

Insight 2: If you can do one thing well -- even if it doesn't seem significant -- you have the potential for phenomenal success.

Even though Steven Spielberg and I achieved nothing significant in high school, we did achieve some things that seemed insignificant to us and to everyone else around us (except our parents).

Steven was an excellent clarinetist and even gained a headline in our yearbook praising him for his acting talent in a school play (although his name was misspelled in the headline). But even more important than his musical or acting talent was his talent in something else: making entertaining home movies with the Super 8 film camera his mother gave him in elementary school. Do you think the faculty or students at Arcadia High even knew about this activity, much less recognized or valued it? I'm sure the faculty never recognized it even though he often cut school specifically to go out and film things. How insignificant was this high school activity of Steven's?

Today, four of the top ten grossing films of all time were directed by Steven Spielberg.

My success was even more mundane than Steven's. My dad had always regretted not learning to type in high school. In his adult years, the fruit of his creative mind was stifled or thwarted over and over again by his inability to type. When I was choosing my electives for my freshman year in high school, he told me I would have to take a year of typing. I argued as hard and as long as I could, but to no avail. In my mind, typing was for girls and I was a teenage boy, and those two thoughts just didn't coincide.

I finally struck a deal with him that both of us could live with. If I could end the semester as the fastest typist in the class, I wouldn't have to take a second semester of typing. By the end of the first semester, I was the fastest typist out of about sixty students. Little did I know that typing would become the cornerstone of most of my other achievements in life. Thanks, Dad.

As I mentioned earlier, I joined the Civil Air Patrol my freshman year to be with two of my buddies. The three of us were the only ones out of sixteen hundred students in our high school who were part of this off-campus organization. Certainly this was another "insignificant" part of my teenage years. Right? Wrong! Because I could type, I was quickly promoted over my friends. This was the first success I had tasted since little league baseball, and it tasted wonderful. I began to work harder to fulfill requirements for promotions, and with each promotion the taste grew sweeter and the desire to succeed more consuming.

By the time I was graduated from high school, I was the highest ranking CAP cadet in the state and had won numerous national awards, including flying lessons that enabled me to receive my private pilot's license when I was sixteen.

My achievements in CAP meant nothing to the faculty and students of my high school, but they meant plenty to my future. My achievement in this one area taught me that I could be successful even if the success came in an apparently insignificant endeavor. As a skinny, acne-faced teenager, I gained my first bit of self-respect.

A Special Note to Parents Who Want to See Their Children Learn to Achieve Success

You can help your children break the bonds of mediocrity that school and their peers use to bind them. Children don't have to be a success at everything -- or, for that matter, anything significant -- as long as they are successful at something.

The key is for you to listen and watch for those things that seem interesting to them. My seven-year-old loves to "build" with Legos, so every time he creates a new structure, I praise him -- not just with generalities ("That's a great building") but with meaningful specifics ("I like how you put windows on each side, and I love the roof").

For my nineteen-year-old it's his ability on the drums and guitar. He's totally self-taught. His music is the kind I would never listen to for more than a few minutes, but boy, is he good! And I am so proud of him. He is also the best friend any of his friends c...
