I have to say that Dan has only done a superficial look at Agile. I get the impression that he has never sat down with any working Agile teams before, and he is merely relying on hearsay from a few people he found that got fed up or failed at an adoption.I have had exposure to many companies that have used Agile principles and values to get them refocused on delivering customer value. As a retired director of engineering at Intel, we adopted many of the methods to help us improve our customer and employee satisfaction, the quality of our products, and to meet a number of other business goals. SalesForce, HP, Microsoft, Ericson, John Deere, Nike, Pivotal, and many other companies have done the same and have all had success as well. I wish Lyons would have given a more balanced view to his readers that not everything is as bad as he has painted in his book.I will give Lyons credit for calling out the issues with training firms and consultancies that have created the mess that he calls out in his book as well as the undertrained managers who adopt Agile in name only. For my 32 years at Intel, I have had many people try to sell me something that claimed to be something it was not. In the case of Agile, the same was true. I can't count the number of underqualified consultants who never wrote a line of software code or built a product who were eager to certify us in something or teach us a method that was merely snake oil. They were just a group of people who were trying to profit from the popularity of Agile adoptions. So, for the people who fell for that, I could see how they felt like lab rats.
I blew through “Lab Rats†by Dan Lyons in 2 days. It's a sad and sometimes hilarious analysis and indictment of Silicon Valley's quirky sweatshop culture and the blatant discrimination practices of some of its biggest employers. The book is thoroughly researched with plenty of expert analysis and statistics for a serious nonfiction title. Yet it's not the least bit tedious and in fact will leave you chuckling and gasping at times. It also ends with profiles and analysis of employers who reject Silicon Valley's brutal culture and are espousing sane employment practices. Bravo! 5 stars!!!
I bought this book the day before yesterday and it's on my Kindle app. I couldn't stop reading this book every time I took a break.I live in Silicon Valley and I've seen first-hand since the 70s growing up here that the privilege tech Bro attitude is really not the answer. We do need a social justice investing type of Venture capitalist, and I'm glad to read that's happening. I especially like the section on zebras instead of unicorns (you'll have to read the section in the book to understand). If you live in Silicon Valley have worked in Tech at all recently or in the past, I guarantee you're going to find this book interesting.
Dan Lyons has written an informative book about how tech companies have changed the nature of work and how we live in a nefarious way. Mr. Lyons expresses numerous examples of how businesses are mistreating workers for gaining short term profits. hHe does show how some businesses are treating workers better. To be fair, his book focuses more on what Republican administrations have done wrong than in what Democratic administrations. He is a good writer. Great read.
Management theory is rapidly moving from the idea that a happy worker is a productive worker to the idea that employees should be grateful they have work and maximize profit for investors and shareholders. New management theories and practices that started in the IT incubator have moved to huge multi-national corporations with zero evidence they work, some with evidence they DON'T work, yet as long as the vulture capitalists profit, its full steam ahead! This book is a great read and should be an eye opener for anyone in any working capacity but especially for those working in very small places that are about to 'make it big.'
This is a sobering but thoughtful and ultimately uplifting take. It reflects very good reporting. All rings true. The synthesis of the individual data points/stories/ management thinking is the key. (Dan, good going.). I found it inspiring as someone with 20 years of worrying about leadership in SV. Thank you. Mj
I was expecting something brilliant, but instead got this mishmash of ideas and raw concepts in a vague structure. It’s an important topic, yet the questions in the book were not convincing and suggested solutions remained hollow at best. Previous book was a brilliant personal adventure, but writing a generalist book the same way leaves the writing hollow. I am sorry.
Dan Lyons writing is easy to read and so addictive. This book *is not* suitable for someone who worship Agile or Lean as a religion or who believe Agile is best for everything and every industry. He point out the problem of current working trend that spread of new kind of tech company. However, some part of the book seems lacks of evidence that it relate to the problem. It does not make me fully believe the points he wants to share.
